Global Handwashing Day

Published : January 26, 2016

October 15th is Global Handwashing Day - spreading the awareness of the importance of washing hands with soap to save lives and improve health of children all around the world.

Did you know that smart devices have been proven to carry more germs than a toilet seat? Eeew!! That's one good reason to focus on washing hands really, really well - for kids and adults alike!

Today's annual Global Handwashing Day is celebrated by over 200 million people in 100 countries worldwide. It's purpose is to recognise and share the benefits of hand washing to prevent the spread of germs. In developing countries, washing hands is an easy, effective, and affordable “do-it-yourself vaccine” that prevents infections and saves lives.

Sydney GP and mum of three, Dr Rachelle Silver, said “Kids will be kids and it is inevitable that they will play in the dirt and come into contact with a lot of germs throughout their day. Learning good hygiene habits can significantly reduce the number of illnesses and infections our kids are exposed to, and on a larger scale, save lives, by cutting diarrhea and acute respiratory infections.”

The Palmolive Clean Hands, Good Health program teaches healthy hand hygiene through free, fun educational handwashing kits, which are distributed to pre-schools. There's a simple song about washing hands kids can see on the interactive site too.

You can find out more about Global Handwashing Day including washing hands best practice (which should take 20 seconds - about the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice) at www.globalhandwashing.org
