Beef in Red Wine

A hearty casserole with a French flavour.

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Serves: 4


4 pieces of steak
2 tbsps brandy
150g butter
2 beef stock cubes
8 small onions
2 tbsps tomato paste
4 tbsps flour
2 tsps French mustard
2 ½ cups water
250g small mushrooms
4 tbsps red wine


  • Melt butter in a shallow pan, add steaks and cook until done as desired.
  • Remove meat from pan.  Add peeled whole onions, cook for a few minutes, then remove from pan.
  • Stir in flour and cook for one minute.  Gradually stir in water and wine.
  • Add brandy, the crumbled stock cubes, tomato paste and mustard.  Mix well.
  • Place steaks in a small oven-proof dish, add onions and mushrooms.
  • Pour prepared sauce over steaks.  Cover and bake in a moderate oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
