Orange or Lemon Poppyseed Cake

A traditional favourite.


185g butter
3/4 cup castor sugar
3 eggs
dash vanilla essence
1tsp grated rind of orange or lemon
1 cup plain flour
3/4 cup self raising flour
1/4 cup yoghurt
1/4 cup fresh orange or lemon juice
1/2 cup poppy seeds


  • Preheat oven to 180C.
  • Cream butter and sugar.
  • Beat in eggs. Add vanilla and rind.
  • Mix flours then add seeds.
  • Add yoghurt and juice.
  • Put mixture into tin. Tap to release any air.
  • Bake in a moderate oven 50-60 minutes
